    We HELP you
    REDISCOVER your VOICE

Through songwriting, coaching,  community and a whole lot of heart, Katie and Karen guide you back to your creative core— one lyric, one melody, and one breakthrough at a time.

    MEET THE FOUNDERS

    Karen Joy Brown

Songwriter, poet, podcast host, and Gateless Writing teacher with a gift for pulling the soft genius out of people.

Seeking stability amid a tumultuous family life, Karen joined a fundamentalist Christian church as a teen, only to one day come to the shocking realization she would have to leave both the church community and the marriage tied to it to reclaim herself. More recently, she left her role as a Spanish teacher to rediscover her songwriting life and reignite her authentic voice through recovery work.

Karen writes with riveting emotional honesty and quietly captivating poetry, singing in a soul-infused voice from her years in a gospel choir. Her songs don't just tell stories—they inhabit you. She writes lyrics that stand alone as poems, but her melodies sink into the fiber of your being, weaving unflinching words into something both deeply personal and universally true.

    KATIE PHILLIPS

Singer-songwriter with a voice that stops you in your tracks and songs that stick in your ribcage long after the last note fades. Recognized for her extraordinary vocal gift since childhood, Katie carries her father's words close: that one of life's greatest honors would be using her voice as sacred offering to those she loves.

Drawing from a kaleidoscope of influences, Katie crafts visceral songwriting that creates narrative universes you immediately inhabit. With virtuosic melodies and high craft, she plunges you into her most vulnerable worries, pains, and tender loves, each song startlingly intimate and specific.

As a certified Peer Support Specialist with over 15 years experience supporting women and families in crisis, Katie brings the same deep empathy to her music that guides her healing work with others. As a former member of the beloved trio the Bootleg Honeys, she's lit up stages with her powerhouse vocals and magnetic presence, crafting music that's as soul-baring as it is unforgettable.

      • Radical

My voice and life have transformed utterly. The ecosystem of love and care that Karen and Katie have built — between the Not So Open Mic, the Song Salons, the Podcast, and my 1:1 vocal training — it is truly unlike anything else out there for women songwriters. Radical.

      • creatively charged

The Song Salon is an incredibly empowering and inspiring experience that I look forward to every week. From the moment I joined, the atmosphere was warm, supportive, and creatively charged—perfect for both seasoned songwriters and beginners alike. Katie and Karen were not only knowledgeable and passionate, but also deeply committed to helping everyone find and strengthen their unique voice. What made it truly special was the sense of community and connection—everyone was encouraged to share openly and lift each other up. Every session brings me a renewed sense of confidence, creativity, and sisterhood. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

      • healing act of resistance

It’s so important that the Not So Open Mic exists. It’s a healing experience to be in such a supportive and encouraging space for women to share songs and stories freely. It feels like such an act of resistance in today’s world.

      • nurturing + uplifting A.F.

This open mic is like therapy and church all rolled into one! The vulnerability, raw emotion, and courage I see every time are deeply inspiring! This is the first place outside my car I’ve been moved to share a song since middle school choir….. I will get up there one Sunday because this place is supportive, nurturing and uplifting A.F.
